It feels great when we feel good about life. We feel empowered, confident and hopeful.
However, that’s not always the case. There are times when we experience overwhelming and powerful feelings of emptiness and disconnection, and these feelings cause us anxiety, loneliness and deep sadness. We feel detached from ourselves and everyone around us. These feelings can hit us when we least expect; anytime and anywhere. Like an intruder in the dark of night, they show up at our front door and uninvitedly enter our home. Without reservation, they go through our belongings, break our valued possessions and expose our secrets. They sneak up on us and whisper powerful words of self-doubt and fear. In a hopeless and helpless state of mind we feel uneasy, vulnerable and scared. We may pray, beg and plea for this unwelcoming intruder to go away. But, sometimes, our efforts are in vain and we find ourselves hostage. We surrender and hide in pain. However, with strength and the will to fight, we’re able to reclaim our home. Like the sound of a door closing and the footsteps of the intruder fading away, we are reassured that everything will be okay. At that moment, we once again feel safe and free to experience the beauty of life.
